Russell Brand is being accused of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse that happened over the course of seven years when he was at the height of his fame.
The Sunday Times, the Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches worked together to look into these serious claims from 2006 to 2013. They came to light as a result. Importantly, Russell Brand has categorically denied all these claims.
Five alleged victims were interviewed for the investigation; four of them chose to stay anonymous. Maybe some of them know how to catch a cheater? The results were shown in a Dispatches documentary on Saturday night.
The Sunday Times said that they contacted Russell Brand's representatives with details of the accusations and information to help him remember the events that were being looked into. They gave him eight days to respond. Initially, Brand's legal team cited the complexity of the questions and the decision to protect the anonymity of the women as reasons for not immediately responding.
They also suggested that this was part of a premeditated strategy aimed at harming Brand's reputation, asserting that there might be an agenda against him as an alternative media broadcaster competing with mainstream media. The Sunday Times further noted that Brand's lawyers did not respond to subsequent requests for comment.
Russell Brand posted a statement online after being given more chances to respond to the allegations. However, the Sunday Times reported that when they asked for the evidence contradicting their reporting, they received no response.
According to the Sunday Times, one of the women involved claimed that Brand entered into a relationship with her when she was just 16 years old, while he was 31. She alleged that he referred to her as "the child" during a purportedly emotionally abusive and controlling three-month relationship. As she talked about what happened, she said Brand put his penis in her mouth and choked her, so she punched him in the stomach to protect herself.
Another woman said Russell Brand raped her at his home in Los Angeles in 2012. That same day, she got help at a rape crisis center. The Sunday Times reported that she messaged Brand expressing fear and a sense of being taken advantage of, to which Brand responded with an apology.
A third woman claimed that Brand sexually assaulted her while they were working together in Los Angeles. She alleged that he threatened legal action if she disclosed her accusation to anyone else. A fourth woman reported being sexually assaulted by Brand, describing him as physically and emotionally abusive.
The Sunday Times further disclosed that several others accused Brand of physical and emotional abuse, sexual harassment, and bullying. Notably, these individuals were not connected and mostly chose to remain anonymous.
The report also revealed that a woman, referred to as Alice, who claimed to have encountered Brand when she was 16, contacted Brand's former agency, Tavistock Wood, in 2020 to inform them of his alleged behavior and seek an apology. However, the response she received came from lawyers representing Brand, who denied the allegations on his behalf and accused her of pursuing financial gain.
Sources also conveyed concerns about Russell Brand's behavior during his time at the BBC, describing an incident involving "alarming display of aggression and disrespect." The Sunday Times reported that Brand's attitude towards women became something of an "open secret" in radio and TV production.
In response, Tavistock Wood stated that they had terminated all professional ties with Russell Brand, noting that they had initially believed Brand's denial of the allegations in 2020 but now felt they were misled.
In response to the accusations, both Channel 4 and the BBC have released comments. Channel 4 was very worried about the disturbing claims, especially those about shows it made between 2004 and 2007. They have looked through a lot of documents, but they haven't found any proof that the alleged incidents were reported to Channel 4 at the time.
BBC, on the other hand, brought up the fact that Brand left the organization in 2008 after a major editorial breach.
"Even though these accusations against Russell Brand are quite terrifying, let's just be skeptical. Well, the accusers may have changed their stories because of false memories or personal vendettas. It's not cool to say this, but memories aren't perfect, and people can misremember things, especially when they're getting emotional," warns Wilda Harrison, a relationship psychologist.
